The causes of censorship are surprisingly few, and even fewer when they are in open society whey they can be put through the court systems. Therefore, the perfect model for the causes of censorship is a closed society. In a closed society the reasons that someone would censor anything are clearer and more apparent. In the former USSR, for instance, there was censorship if you didn’t portray a government official in the correct light. This is the cause of going against the political doctrine that the government holds up. I believe that political censorship is probably the most virulent of all forms of censorship, because it is usually shoved under the rug. Another reason for censorship would be libel, or because the article or book offended someone. This even happens many times in the United States, when an article portraying someone in a less than appropriate light is forced to print a retraction by the courts. Lastly, one of the remaining causes of censorship is to censor something that would corrupt a minor. This occurs in today’s school systems, with librarians excluding certain books from their collection.

In the former USSR, censorship was excruciatingly tight. Many people were prosecuted for even speaking badly about the government. Communism was something that was shaky as it is, without people printing and talking about how it was not the perfect society that it was envisioned to be. The USSR used this form of censorship to its extent mainly because every business in the country was state owned, including all of the newspapers and television stations. However, the best nation to ever utilize censorship to further a political doctrine was the Nazi’s. The way that the Nazi’s flew across Western Europe and squelched many of the revolutions was because they controlled the flow of information. This allowed the Nazi’s to almost win the war against the Allies. I believe that if the flow of information was not controlled, the Nazi’s would not have been nearly as notorious as they are today.

The next reason that censorship is used today is libel. This is a very acceptable form of censorship because libel by definition is something that is a false publication that ruins someone’s reputation. This is also true to some extent with slander and how damages are taken. I believe censoring libel is one of the only acceptable forms of censorship. This is because libel is actually not true, and something that is false should never be published. The last and final form of censorship I believe is probably the most controversial form of censorship.

The next form of censorship is censoring something that is the most current form of censorship. The censoring of something that is deemed to corrupt the minds of minors is something of a good form of censorship. However, I do not believe that the government should be mandating what their children should be reading about. How can a government legislate something that shelters its children? The short answer to that question is no. This is because what corrupts one child may not corrupt the next child, and eventually, we would end up censoring every book in the world, and our children would be sheltered. I believe that parents should ultimately decide what their child can and cannot read or see. Overall, censorship can be a tool of war, of regulating libel, or even child raising.

In conclusion, censorship is mainly caused by personal interest and power. If you have the power, and the initiative this leaves the door open to censorship, but this doesn’t guarantee it. In countries that have open societies, much like the United States, censorship is rare, and does the opposite of its intended effect. However, in closed societies, censorship is somewhat common, even though it is done subtly. Censorship in the United States is rare. However we must make sure it stays that way. Censorship is something that we can do without.
