Juveniles that commit crimes deserve equal punishment as adult criminals. But that is not happening in today’s court systems. Not only are juveniles and adults receiving unequal punishments but minorities are being treated unequally when compared to whites in the court system. Also when juveniles, who are tried as adults, are placed in adult prisons they are much younger then most inmates. As a result the juveniles are often assaulted, raped or sometimes even murdered. Also a majority of these juveniles spiral into depression and commit suicide. Our forefathers believed that everyone was created equal and as Americans we should still practice that belief. Therefore all criminals, including juveniles, should be tried as adults with a few exceptions. People that have a mental disability or youth, under the age of ten should not be tried as adults because they may not understand the difference between right and wrong. Therefore, they might not understand that the act the committed was wrong. Trying everyone suspected of a crime as an adult while solve other problems too. It may lower the juvenile crime rate and the injustice between minorities and whites in the court system. Also, juveniles being tried as adults will not be as uncommon as it is today so the media’s focus on it will lessen. This will make the idea of committing a crime less appealing because it will not be glorified by the media as many juvenile crimes are today. Although trying all juveniles as adults appear to solve all problems. There is still the problem of all the risks that juveniles face being place in adult prisons. Therefore, juveniles should be placed in a juvenile detention center until they turn eighteen. Then they will be moved to an adult prison to finish out their sentence if needed. So my final solution is that all juvenile offenders, except for youth under ten or juveniles that suffer from a mental disability, be tried as an adult. Juveniles will begin their sentence in a juvenile detention center and then when they turn eighteen then will finish their sentence in an adult prison.
