SteroidsTimeline--Timeline of how steroids have come into the game of baseball

Steroid Question and Answers

Anabolic steroids have been around since the 1930s, and have been suspected in athletics since the 1960s. With a reliable urine test in place, the International Olympic Committee first tested in 1976. It was 1989 before the NFL began testing. At the Seoul Olympics in 1988, in arguably history's greatest 100- meter race, Ben Johnson streaked across the finish line ahead of Carl Lewis in the amazing time of 9.79 seconds. He apparently won the gold medal and set a world record; however, days later, Mr. Johnson tested positive for steroids. The news made headlines around the world. The victory and record were voided. The impact was even more profound. The stars that were arising in Track lost their fame and it has taken U.S. track years of serious testing and strict penalties to recover. Craig Maskeck, the CEO of USA Track & Field asks, “doesn’t baseball realize that the way they’re managing this has robbed a big part of the magic of the game & its records?” (“In the Fray”). He hopes that baseball doesn’t make the same mistake that track did in the early 90’s, as U.S. Track underestimated the steroid problem then moved too slowly to make up for it.
