In America, police are given the responsibility to uphold law and order. Their job is to serve and protect society. In order to do their job, the police are given a considerable amount of power over the people whom they are supposed to protect. However, when individuals receive too much power there is always the possibility that this power will be abused. The two most common problems that result from the abuse of power by police are police brutality and police corruption. Police brutality is the “excessive use of physical force, assault, and verbal attacks and threats by police officers” (“Police Brutality”). Police corruption is the gain of financial or political benefit by police in exchange for not attempting to stop illegal activities or partaking in the illegal activities themselves (“Police Corruption”). Police abuse of power poses a serious threat to the safety and wellbeing of American society. If police are engaging in criminal activities, then how can they be expected to uphold law and order? The abuse of power by police is an issue that must be addressed so that solution can be found.
