Why is it that women choose to compare themselves to those they see around them? Imagine a world where every woman looked exactly the same. It would be impossible to distinguish one girl from the next and distinct identities would be lost. It seems that society is moving closer to a time when diversity will be limited. Women tend to follow the trends they see in the media in hopes of gaining the status of the models and actresses. Psychology has been found to play a huge part in why women try to mimic the looks of others. It is human nature for people to base their own status in life off of that of those around them. However, unrealistic images are being portrayed and girls are beginning to develop a negative self-image of themselves. They will go to great lengths to attain the beauty that is presented to them. In doing so, they are becoming greatly discouraged when they are unable to match up with what they see. Self-worth and happiness are becoming too closely associated with physical appearance. As a result, America is seeing a decrease in self-esteem which is leading to an increase in excessive dieting and eating disorders.
