Researchers are working on trying to find out why the media uses thin models. Based on the thin-ideal, the people behind the media know that bodies sell and they are going to use this to their advantage. Most men in America today are attracted to women who are young, thin, and flawless. By using women who best exemplify this perfect image, the media is better able to appeal to men and draw their attention to what they want to be seen. For example, using women in commercials and advertisements for things such as cars, the company will grab the attention of men more easily. The advertisement will be more favorable to view, and in turn this will increase the frequency at which the product is being bought. Besides using women just to draw in the attention of a larger crowd, the media uses these prime actresses and models for economic reasons too. “By presenting an ideal that is difficult to attain, they will be assured of growth and profits… Women who are insecure about their bodies are more likely to buy beauty products, new clothes, and diet aids” (“Beauty”). The media industry also found that by promoting youth along with thinness, they will be placing themselves in a win-win situation. Although not all women struggle with their weight, every woman is faced with the inevitable problem of aging. By presenting both ideals in one ad, the amount of viewers will increase.
