Obesity is considered now to be one of the most prevalent causes illness and death in America today. Over 300,000 people die each year because of obesity related problems and diseases. This can all be attributed to society as a whole. Society today is one that obesity can flourish in. For example more money is spent advertising fast foods that are high in fat than in the 5-A-Day food program. Each year over 10 billion dollars are spent on the advertising of fast foods and foods that are high in fat, while a mere 2 million is spent each year on promoting the 5-A-Day healthy choice snack alternatives. Another way that society is opening the door for obesity is the fact that many schools are getting rid of recess while still stocking the vending machines with foods that are unhealthy and high in fat. Instead of working out and regular exercise, Americans choose to take the easy route and are using more and more supplements each year. Just last year alone Americans dished out over 34 billion dollars on dietary supplements. 44 million Americans are considered to be medically obese and 2 out of every 3 that are obese want to do something about it, but don’t know where to start (Obesity Epidemic). Since 1991 obesity in America has jumped a staggering 74% and this is the reason that Americans need to get smart and start thinking about their weight and stop thinking about what they will have for their next meal. Obesity in America can be attributed to many factors including fast food, lack of exercise, too much television watching, and just flat out laziness.
