Cocaine abuse and obesity have many similarities. MSG causes food addiction and leads to obesity in the same way that cocaine blocks dopamine receptors in the brain and causing a feeling of euphoria. Not only does cocaine and MSG work in the same way, they attack the same part of the brain, and eventually lead to the destruction of brain cells. Because both affect the way the brain functions, cocaine and MSG both have addictive properties that make the user crave more and more. In cocaine use this leads to cocaine addiction, and when it comes to MSG this causes the consumer to eat more fatty foods.
Both obesity and cocaine use has been the main source for several films. Morgan Spurlock’s Supersize Me has already won 27 awards and the movie is still growing even years after it’s original release. Sizing Up Obesity is also a lesser-known documentary about America’s growing obesity problem, as well as its growing waistline. Cocaine based movies include Traffic, which won 4 Oscars and 57 other awards. Another more recent movie is Blow, which follows George Jung, the man who is basically responsible for introducing cocaine into America. This movie is based on a true story, but only won one award despite being one of the most recognized movies about cocaine. By far the most recognized cocaine movie of all time is Scarface. This super film was made in 1983 and starred Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer.
Cocaine is highly regulated by the government. It is illegal to own, transport, sell, or attempt to buy. The food that we eat is also highly regulated, but not enough. The government requires all pre-packaged food items to list their nutritional contents, and that all restaurants have available their nutritional values.
Both cocaine abuse and obesity can cause very dangerous diseases. Frequent cocaine use can cause heart disease, heart attacks, lung disease, and mental disorders such as schizophrenia. Obesity has been linked to heart disease, an increase in cancer risk, breathing problems such as sleep apnea, and mental problems such as depression.
