Unlike the war on drugs, the war on obesity can be won. Addiction is in itself a disease, but with preventative measures we can prevent people from falling into that trap. The first step in preventing obesity is education. If children know what they are eating, then they can make informed decisions on how and what to eat. If people learn how to limit themselves and the dangers of over eating, then obesity can become a problem of the past.

The FDA also needs to pass stricter laws regarding the nutritional content of food. A McDonald’s Big Mac contains 30 grams of fat, and 560 calories. No one should be putting this into his or her body. Also the FDA needs to fund more research on the dangers of MSG, and then pass more laws limiting the amount of MSG in foods.

By passing these laws, it will curb the obesity problem greatly by limiting the unhealthy food that people are exposed to. This didn’t work with cocaine users, because they were already addicted and were already criminals, so breaking another law didn’t mean much to them. However, most obese persons are “big time criminals” and would not consider distributing illegal food. They may however make it for themselves, but it would be much more difficult if they had no access to very unhealthy foods. Of course, there is no way to totally prevent obesity. Some people will just not care and let themselves go anyway, but I truly believe the obesity problem will be severely diminished if my solution is passed.
