Somehow, a happy medium must be found. Removal of police will not work nor will over restricting their power. The solution to the problem lies within one of the main causes of police misconduct. The detachment of police from society must be addressed in order to stop their abuse of power. Police need to spend less time in their patrol cars and more time on the street getting to know the citizens they are being paid to protect. If police are more closely involved with the community they will not forget that the majority of citizens are good people, and they will be less inclined to treat everyone like criminals. A more positive outlook by police on the average citizen would lead to less incidents of police brutality. If police really get to know the people they are protecting they will also be less likely to engage in acts of police corruption such as aiding drug dealers or planting false evidence. When police are seen as actual member of the community rather than just authority figures it will also help to further positive relations between police and civilians. In areas where police have stronger ties to the community, there are lower rates of crime (Glazer). It is important for more communities in America to adopt this style of policing.

In conclusion, while police abuse of power is a serious problem in America, it is not one without a solution. Police cannot be allowed to continue dealing drugs, planting false evidence, beating people, and committing other crimes. The attempts to control police have failed. Extreme measures such as removing police or placing harsh restrictions on them would only breed more crime. Police are a necessary part of society, so it is important that they have involvement with members of society besides criminals. A strong relationship between police and community members would be advantageous for everyone in America. This system of community policing will make our society a much safer place.
