Police abuse of power is not something that happens over night. Most cops do not go into the job looking for opportunities to beat people and earn money illegally. Somewhere along their career police are changed by the job. They are given a considerable amount of power. It is only natural that this power will lead to corruption. In a way, it is unfair for society to place so much power in the hands of these police. Another problem is that police are severely underpaid. They have families to support and bills to pay. They are out there seeing criminals get rich while they continue to make a modest living. It can only be expected that they will take advantage of their power in order to earn more money so that they don’t have to struggle to pay bills. Police brutality is largely caused by the detachment of police from society. Police ride around in their squad cars and mainly come in contact with people committing crimes. When police are only coming in contact with criminals they begin to suspect everyone of being a criminal. They then begin to treat everyone like a criminal. When it comes to solving crimes, police must often rely on informants in order to arrest the correct people. These informants are mainly criminals themselves, so police generally must have a closer relationship with the criminals than the law-abiding citizens. Police do not get to interact enough with the community and see that the majority of society is made up of good people. The Amadou Diallo incident was the result of police thinking everyone is a criminal and caused the death of an innocent man.
